History of European integration

The objective of the course is to offer students a detailed historical account and analysis of the main phases and steps of the European unification project, from the end of World War II, until the present days. The purpose is to provide instruments for an in-depth understanding of the factors and contextual elements that determined the trajectory of the project.

After a first part focused on the immediate aftermath of the war and the debate among ideas on the future shape of Europe, the course will concentrate on Schuman’s idea and the first steps of the European communities. An explanation step-by-step of the following treaties and deepening and widening of the EU will follow, illustrating also the early debates on enlargement policy. The last part of the course will consider more recent developments and the challenges that the project faces nowadays.
